AVID crashes - audio trim with caps lock on

Hi Folks,

Been having this issues since my recent upgrade to MC 2018.10.0.

When I use the trim tool to extend audio while the caps lock is on, my Avid freezes and crashes. I've already done an uninstall and re-install to see if this would resolve the problem, but it didn't.

Here's the error message from the APPEVENT.LOG:

20181031164125 FatalAbort Assertion failed: mixerControl < mixerControlsIter->second.size(), file /Snapshots/relengmini4_1540166821/coresw/AMPI/Host/AMPIChannelData.h, line 183

20181031164125 FatalAbort Assertion failed: mixerControl < mixerControlsIter->second.size(), file /Snapshots/relengmini4_1540166821/coresw/AMPI/Host/AMPIChannelData.h, line 183

Any thoughts or technical support would be appreciated.

Cheers,

KM

Background Queue is blank - but old transcode jobs still proceed in the background

Running Windows 8.1 with Avid MC 7.0.4.  Plenty of RAM for background transcoding (about 24 gb).  Got a bit of a mess and I'm hoping someone has encountered this.  Today I tried to transcode some DSLR media using the Background Transcoding feature.  It's great and I've never had an issue with it.  Let me repeat, I've never had an issue with Background Transcoding before today.

But today, the Background Queue was full of old completed jobs, but not the current job I had just started.  Confused, I clicked the button in the top right hand corner of the background queue window and selected "clear inactive jobs".  Now there is nothing running in the window.  So I re-tried the transcode job again.  Still no status in the background queue window.  Then I hear my hard drives running and figured out that it was transcoding anyway but not showing me what it was up to.  After checking the media tool I saw ".01" and ".02" versions of these files unnessesarily filling up my drives.  Now, I can't seem to stop this transcoding job.  I would just like to cancel all of it and try again but I can't clear the job.

Any ideas?  Is there a way to reset the "Background Queue" permanently so it quits old jobs?  Some sort of preference file I need to delete/rebuild?  I don't want any more media floating around in the media tool than is necessary.  I'd rather not reinstall Avid, but I'm almost ready to do that.

AMT AssetInfoHandler error with a cut range explanation?

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this error with AMT3 (4.4.19.10039)

This occurs with SOME clips while I am attempting to extract frames from a source.  In this case, I have a 7200 frame 1280x720p59.94 clip.  If I attempt a read with a cut from frame 0 to 50, it is ok.  attempt 100 to 150 for instance I get this error:

error: 5004, detail: ..\..\MediaProcessor\src\MediaProcessor\AssetInfoHandler.cpp, 570: cutRange.start () >= 0 && (cutRange.start () < displayRange.length () || displayRange.length () < 0): Invalid cut start position.

Seems to occur with 23.976p and 59.94p clips... Still experimenting but I am hoping someone has a suggestion. way to visually distinguish multiclips in thumbnails of script?

$

Hi all! Apologies if this is a topic already elsewhere on the forum...but I am wondering if there is a way to easily identify which clips are multclips (IE have more than one angle grouped), and which are not in an avid script. I am constantly clicking into  aclip from a script, and enabling/disabling multicam mode to remind myself. But I think it would be really useful just to have sime sort of tiny little signifier, like they do clip icons in bins (in list view). Maybe a little "stacked film" icon in top right corner of thumbnail or soemtnig? Or a little "chain"?

Or does this feature already exist somewhere in setings and I have it disabled? Anyone? Thank you all!

Constant crashing due to "No running thread"

Solved: Deleted the waveform cache and it fixed the issue

I've been getting the following error message about 3-4 times a day for the past couple of weeks.

Exception: std::exception, what:[MainThread] Threads::SendMessageAndWait: No running thread to receive message PlayLoopThread kStopCommand

I can't quit when it happens -- have to force quit -- and lose everything after whatever the previous save was.  Needless to mention, I'm saving a lot these days.

Any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it?

Media Composer:  2018.7.1  (latest version)

iMac 5K Retina - late 2015.

4 Ghz i7

32 GB RAM

AMD Radeon R9

Same error with two drives.  First I used an older G-Raid 4 TB drive running over USB.

Now using new 8TB G-Raid running over Thunderbolt.

Would love some ideas on how to fix, this is not fun to deal with every day.

MC First Project Folder Location - Issues - questions

$

Hi Folks! Sorry for the length. MC First Question on the location and behavior of the Project folder in Win10:

Discolsure - I teach Video Production to high schoolers and we have one Nexus server in our facility and one in a production truck (yes, we're a high school!) We manage roughly 26 user stations in our facility cranking on regular MC so we're not Avid neophytes. In this case, I teach our first year students (10th grade) on MC1st in a separate lab to get them started on the interface, some keyboard shortcuts, basic cuts editing, title tool, audio tools, etc... We joke that we make little Avid editors! But I'm having some issues with project folders and permissions and am looking for counsel on how to fix things when they go bad...

So, upon install there's a folder called, "MC First Avid Projects," that gets created in the Documents folder and appears to be auto-mapped when you launch MC First. (It is the address in the Location field in the splash screen.) All subsequent projects and setting folders get created there as well. Because I have two classes I have two students on one computer in different periods and that's where things go bad trying to keep project folders separated and then trying to clean up the mess.

So lets say a student is not paying attention (despite having several verbal and visual login demos AND written directions with pictures!) and somehow maps a project (using the little white folder icon) to another student's project folder? Then they work, close the project, close MC 1st, sign out of app manager, log off computer - all in the correct order - happy with themself on a good day editing! Only to return the next day, however, to discover after he/she logs in to their computer, app mgr and launches MC 1st, they're faced with an error message that basically says, paraphrasing here: sorry mr. user xxxxx but you don't have "permission to access folder xxxxx on this path: c\user xxxxx..."

What I would like to know is how to move said wayward project folder back inside the correct folder and/or "remap" or "repoint" MC 1st for lack of a better phrase back to it's rightful location? The issue is the permissions error is a road block, it stops the launch cold. The only way I can unstick the failed launch is to sign them out of app mgr which then releases the online connection and then stops the launch. But the problem of the wayward project folder in the wrong folder they're now not allowed to access still remains.

While I can easily copy/drag-drop the wayward project folder back into the aforementioned MC First Projects Folder, I can't launch the software to remap/repoint because of the permissions violation.

Yes, I realize this is a freeware programand it's designed for one user-one computer but there's got to be a way to fix this. Any counsel would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to install 8.9.4 on OS 10.12.6 and I keep getting the warning: "Media Composer can't be installed on this disk. Media Composer First detected. Installation of Media Composer and Media Composer First is not allowed. Please uninstall, Media Composer First."

I've uninstalled EVERYTHING Avid, but still keep getting this warning. I've restarted after deleting everything, but still the same warning.

VDM3BobVideoOut error with MC 2018.10 and 2018.8

Hey everyone,

Anybody run across this error recently?  VDM3BobVideoOut::Setup:Unexpected state

Shows up in the source window as I'm logging clips, usually when shuttling video.  Effectively freezes MC and sometimes causes it to crash.  It's annoying as all get-out, and the only way to avoid the error is to restart avid with my Blackmagic Device disabled.  Of course, that makes it sort of hard to work with any efficiency...  Seems to run normally without my BM hardware connected.

I've experienced this running MC2018.10 and 2018.8, but not prior to those versions.  I ran 2018.3 for months without this issue.  I have reason to believe that this has something to do with my Blackmagic Mini Monitor and newer versions of MC, but as far as I know I'm running the Avid recommended BM drivers (most current 10.11.4, and previously I ran 2018.8 with BM 10.11.2 and experienced the same problem).  Now running on a clean install of Windows 10 Pro with dual GTX1070 cards and a newer GeForce driver.

Got any ideas what this could be caused by?

EDIT:

I got one more error just now, one I hadn't seen yet:

"Exception: Fatal Open I/O Error - Callback consistency check failure"

Just wanted to add that.

MC 2018.8 Problems saving Bins from older Version: Assertion failed

Hi there,

we're having some huge problems with Media Composer 2018.8.

We have around 20 edit suites and are upgrading our whole facility from 8.4.5 to 2018.8. This takes quite a while. Unfortunately a lot of bins created in 8.4.5 raise an error in 2018.8 after you changed something inside the bin and then closing / saving it. The error is:

Assertion failed: iter != sWindowList.end ()

File s:\ppg\mediacomposer\media_composer\mcwindowsmenuutils.cpp, Line:141

The bins do not save and we cannot close them. Any suggestions here? We cannot migrate huge projects by creating a new project in 2018.8 and duplicate every content to a new bin. We need to work simultaneously on 2018.8 and 8.4.5.

Beste wishes

Hello, I've just updated my Mac to MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 with Media Composer 2018.10.

Unfortunately now my Media Composer app crashes at startup; I searched around the forum but I wasn't able to find a solution to my problem. Does anyone have encountered a similar issue? If yes how did you solve it?

AAF from Media Composer to Pro Tools = volumes lost (bug?)

Hello eveyone,

(please excuse my english, I'm french....)

I'm a (long time and experienced) Pro Tools user, mixer and sound editor, and have a question about AAF exports in MC2018.

I'm starting a new project (feature film) and for the first time in my quite long career am experiencing some kind of bug.

The AAFs I've received don't contain the volumes set by the editor. Clip gains do export correctly but volumes won't.

The editor's assistant in charge of the exports tells me there's no particular option to check in order for volumes to be exported.

I've sent the AAF to 2 different "colleagues" with different versions of Pro Tools and the result was the same.

I'm suspecting some bug in MC 2018 or, maybe, some new option the assitant isn't aware of...

Any idea?

Also, in case I don't find the answer, is there an option (as in Pro Tools) to quickly and automaticaly convert volumes to clip gains?

Thanks for any help.

Assigning Tape Name to AMA (Workflow for Reality TV)

I have a couple questions about tape naming and after hours of fruitless searching, I would be grateful for anyone who has answers:

1) I was under the impression it is absolutely imperative for assistant editors to assign a tape name to raw AMA files before transcoding to avoid possible problems when going online?  Is this the case?

2) Is the importance of assigning a tape name because it marries the metadata to the AMA file inside Avid, so if media is moved or a clip in Avid is corrupted, Avid can then use the metadata to find the raw footage when going online?

3) When assigning the tape name, do you assign the name of the last folder in the tapeless media folder structure?

4) A friend working in reality TV says his post house never assigns tape names to tapeless media (only tape) because for some reason it messes with their GoPro footage.  For this reason, it is this company's cardinal rule that raw media never be moved from a drive.  Sounds like a good rule but maybe a little precarious?  Has anyone else heard of not tape naming because it introduces bugs, and is this a common reality TV workflow?

5) Lastly, I couldn't answer this question and was hoping someone here might be able to:  When assigning a tape name, if there is any typo, it doesn't seem the error can be canceled out of or deleted as shown here: https://vimeo.com/123800680

Thanks so much!

1080 ti 8mb or P4000??? Help!

Before I take some classes I'm doing a 6 month self study of 3d Studio Max, After Effects and Avid.  I am building a computer and need some advice.  All the programs have been tested and confirm to work with the 1080,  all except Avid which only recommends Quadro cards.  Is anyone using the 1080? Are you having problems?  Does anyone know what program features that won't work with the 1080? This what I have so far...

Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor

Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Asus - Prime Z370-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Asus - DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

Microsoft - Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit

I don't know all I want to do with the programs because I don't know all that they can do (or what I can imagine).  I'm starting out wanting to edit videos, doing some animation and adding special effects.

Loosing workspace settings

Hi

I´m working on several different Avid MC systems. All with different setups of monitors. Some 2 x 4k, others just one monitor.

I usually import my rather complex user settings, all handcrafterd to the Avid I´m using.

My problem is, if I open a wrong user setting set up to different resoultion monitors, I loose all af my Workspace settings.

I then have to do them all over again.

Any other having this problem and know who to solve it?

Another thing that bothers me is source/recorder windows on high resolution monitors can´t be scaled up to use the whole monitor. Is there a workaround?

Thanks

:)

deblocking/debanding filter (MC, BCC) ?

I would like to smooth some heavily pixelated/banded 720p MP4 videos.

Quickly browsing through my effects palette (MC, BCC 10, RED 5.6), I couldn't find something called deblocking or debanding...BCC's DV Fixer doesn't seem to fix that kind of problem...

What filter/tool would you use to accomplish this, without sacrificing too much of the clip sharpness ?

2018.5 audio punch in oddities

Hopefully fixed in later versions? Do let me know which ones.

Spacebar now toggles the punch off & on - timeline keeps playing. Now have to click in TC bar to stop playback.

BEWARE: using escape key will cause Avid to no longer keep ANY of the punchin recordings. Seemingly only fixed with restart of app.

in-out point add edit.. playhead

Hi

If I zoom way in, the blue playhead is like double with 1 frame apart..there's a right side slightly dimmer than the left side... Not sure the reason for this, in the first place. Anyone know why it is that way.. and the benefit? it's definetely by desgn

if I then make an out point at a cut, I have to use the "right" side of the playhead, in order to have it be excast at the cut. If I then make an add edit at that chosen out point, the add edit chooses the "left" side of the playhead, so that the add edit point is 1 frame before the out point...

what's the genious about this? is there a setting that I dont know off. it's crazy annoying.
