Providing compressed video frames using the ISampleProvider2 interface

$

Hi all,

I am writing an AMA plugin that needs to provide compressed video frames in formats that are natively supported by Media Composer (DNxHD, XDCAMHD etc.). As media files need to be accessed using custom IO API, I need to implement the ISampleProvider2 interface.

I started to write some evaluation code that reads a raw DNxHD file and provides samples thru the ISampleProvider2 interface. Problem: I did not find the right configuration to provide compressed video frames, but only uncompressed ones.

My current assumption is that if the IUncompressedImageProvider interface is not implemented, then Composer should expect compressed essence as defined in the AAF… But if I do not implement it, then Media Composer displays “Exception: A serious error has occured! It is recommended that you restart the application immediately” when trying to play the clip, just after querying the interface. If I implement IUncompressedImageProvider, then Media Composer works fine but expects uncompressed video frames: I tried to fillup frame buffers with uncompressed/dummy data and it plays OK.

I first suspected the “Serious error” to be related to something wrong in my AAF, so I implemented the full ISampleMapping interface and disabled the ISampleProvider one. Like this it works fine, I am able to play my raw DNxHD file in Composer. At least I am now assuming essence description in the AAF is valid, but ISampleMapping does not fulfill the requirements.

So what is the right way to tell Composer that video is compressed when using ISampleProvider2 interface? Is it supported? Could anyone help with this?

Kind regards,

Raphael Legrand

Transferring Avid to a new Computer

Hello,

Forgive me if this topic has been addressed.

I've been using Avid MC for nearly 10 years - on the same computer (Mac OS X 10.13.2).  I finally got a new computer, running MacOS High Sierra.  However, I've realized I might be unable to transfer Avid over onto the new computer.  I've been running Avid MC 6.5, with a Permanent License and no expiration - however, it seems I'm unable to enter my information (system ID, etc.) to download the software onto the new computer, and the original install discs don't work.

Am I out of luck, and have to purchase it again?

AMA database during an upgrade

I am currently running MC 7.0 and intend to upgrade to the latest version. I have a nunber of quick-turnaround projects where I link media via AMA and edit and export the project without importing the media. Is there any way to save and restore this database when I upgrade? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

MC 8.10 SD project weirdness

I just need to see if someone can validate what I'm seeing on my system.

I'm transferring some laserdiscs to DVD (stuff I own that will never be released on DVD or which have been altered between the LD release and the DVD release). The setup is the LD player connected voa a BMD Intensity pro 4K card. The project is set for NTSC 30i. I capture using the capture tool, and expectt he  ingested media to be NTSC 30i (720x480). However, the media tool shows it to be an image size of 1440x1080 with a raster dimension of 720x480. The encoding is correctly marked as DV 25 411 (NTSC). The LD is connected over S-Video, and there are no conversions in the BMD desktop software.

Even better, I round trip the video through Resolve with a 30i project and deliver to as 30i using MXF Op-Atom and the Avid NTSC 1:1 8-bit CODEC. This gets written to a separate numbered directory and linked into a new bin. The media in that bin shows up as 1920x1080i, so when dropped into a sequence it gets a FrameFlex applied, forcing another render. If I look at the media created by Resolve using MediaInfo, it's actually SD 720x486 (should be 720x480, but I forgot to change that setting).

So there's two parts to this; First, can someone with a BMD capture card capture an SD source into an NTSC 30i project and then look with the Media tool to see what are the image and raster sizes.

Next, using that media, export an AAF to Resolve, create a 30i project (remember to set it to interlaced in the project settings), do any sort of color correction, and then send it back using the AAF option with the format as MXF OP-ATOM, codec NTSC Avid 1:1 (NTSC), resolution 720x480 DV, PAR 4:3, Flat pass OFF. Send it to a new numbered directory in the Avid Media Files directory tree. In MC, create a new bin and drag the msmMMOB.mdb file to the bin to populate it (you'll have to restart MC to get it to create the database file). Check the Media Tool for image and raster sizes.

A bit of a process to be sure, but something odd is going on and I think it's MC, but I want to make sure.

Many of my large QuickTime .mov files do not play anymore.  What is the future of these files?  How should we be outputting to avoid such problems?

On opening Media Comp/First an Exception note presents and neither menu nor button permits further action. I have tried repair/reinstal but the Exception Note persists and stops any attempt to create a new project.

YUV422 format not showing in MC or QT

I recorded video using a JVC GY HM 170u and used the HD 1080 QT YUV422 setting providing the best color sample. However after taking QT off the card and viewing in my computer I can not see the video. Importing into MC I see the green bar on the source monitor indicating a mixed frame rate however I was shot at 30 FPS and imported fine at 30 FPS.

When I reencode the video to QT match source h264 I can see the video in MC however it does seems washed out. Waiting on a reply from JVC Tech Lorenzo White.

Could someone have an idea what is going on? I can view the files in VLC, both audio and 1 and 2 are there fine.

As a timeline, show the name of the tracks from the multichannel audio wav file

$

We recorded 8 tracks of field produciton audio simultaneously. The recorder saved them as 8-track WAV files, and the recordist added metadata with descriptions for each track (boom, lav, etc...). When these files import to Avid (MC 6.0.3.3 on OSX), I can see that the metadata is imported. The bin shows custom columns for TRK1, TRK2, etc... and for my WAV file, I can see that these tracks are assigned boom, lav, etc.

However, I can't seem to get this metadata to show up on the timeline, where it would actually be helpful for editing. Is there any way to get the track names to show up on the timeline, or is there some other workaround I need to do to be able to see which mic each audio track contains?

Thanks in advance!

Time for a "Replace Clip" button?

When working on effects heavy timelines, what slows me down more than anything is how long it takes to replace a clip which has effects associated with it.

With many effects I can step in an change the shot (which slows the Avid down in the processes).

But with things like Symphony CC effects, Motion FX, Frame Flex, LUTs, Audio Suite, levels and EQ, there's no straight forward way to replace a clip.

I've either got to save a preset and re-apply (ie: Audio Suite, Motion and CC) or write down the parameters and re-create the effect (ie: Audio levels, Frame Flex and LUTs).

I think there should be keystroke like the Replace Edit command to simply Replace the Clip but retain the associated effects.

Visually indicate edit modes on client monitor

This one goes back a long way. When in trim mode or effects mode, I wish there was something that could appear on the client's monitor to indicate they can space out or check their email. Nothing is more tedious than being in the room while the editor fixes a music edit or such, and it's equally annoying with the client remarks on something unrealated to what you're working on because they're not sure what the fudge is going on. Or you resume screening and don't realize the client is blissed out checking their Instagram because they think you're still tweaking. Sad

The visual indication could take a number of forms, such as:

  • - a border appears and the legend "TRIM MODE" or "EFFECT MODE" appears on the screen
  • - the overall image dims substantially
  • - a red diagonal slash supered over picture

That would not only make clients/producers more productive but allow them to know when we're back into standard editing/screening mode. Whatever the form of the visual indication, it should be jarring enough when it turns on/off to get people's attention again.

Obviously this would be a cofigurable thing that you could set up and then turn on/off with settings or a command.

HDR WORKFLOW HELP

My client want a 4k HDR video that I can post on youtube.  Youtube has these requirements for HDR:

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7126552?hl=en

It basically says this:

2160p, 59.94, Color primaries - Rec. 2020

Color matrix - Rec. 2020 non-constant luminance

EOTF - PQ or HLG (Rec. 2100)

Video bitrate - H264 66-85 Mbps

Container:  MOV H264 10 bit or MP4 DNxHR HQX

------------------------

It mentions using resolve with these settings (but nothing for Avid):

  • Go to Project Settings and choose the "Color Management" pane.
  • Choose DaVinci Resolve YRGB Color Managed as the Color Science.
  • Choose either Rec.2100 ST2084, or Rec.2100 HLG as the Output Color Space.
  • Export using the QuickTime container with a supported codec.
  • ------------------

The footage is Slog 3, UHD, 59.94.  Shot with the Sony FS7.

    ----------------

I found these slog 3 to HDR luts:

    https://www.patreon.com/alister

    ------------------

Does anyone know the step by step process to pull this off in AVID?  I played around with a UHD 59.94 project, but a SERIOUS ERROR occurred when I tried to output a file and the scope was not in NITS, so I don't think I was doing it right.  Is there a tutorial anywhere???

I have the latest version of AVID and a consumer LG HDR TV.

    Thanks!

Disable command-P to print (will give up firstborn for this)

The last time I had to print my timeline the millenium date started with "19" and I had a lot more hair.

But in hastily hitting the default keyboard shortcut to enlarge the timeline, I sometimes do command-P by accident, and if I'm especially lucky it'll be 2 or 3 times in a row to really zoom in. Then I have to wait while the system digs up the print dialog and have to cancel the 2 or 3 requests. This happens to me at least 5 times a day, and so I've had to learn curse words in that many different languanges to keep things interesting.

So... how about at least an option to turn that pretty useless shortut off? This has been one of my Pet Peeves for literally 20 years.

is there any way to enable auto keyframes

I often create size and position changes with titles, but it's a pain to always have to add start and end keyframes.  I realize the last few versions of MC haven't had it, but is there any way to have that option?

Effect editor settings doesn't seem to have it.

    Thanks.

AVCHD to a format AVID likes

I have been trying to bring in files from a JVC GYHM 170u camera with the codec YUV422 which is an AVCHD codec. I can only bring the files in by linking and when I transcode or mixdown the sequence I get a time out error.

"Exception: NEMFileWriter::ExecuteInternal TIMEOUT - NEMFileWriter has detected upstream pipe stall"

I went back to other projects and have had no problem so it must be with the AVC.

To complete this project I need to transcode the AVC before I bring it in to Media Composer. What would be the best format to preserve the color sampling of 422?

Wich AMA plugin to work with MKV files?

    Hello there,

I'm trying to link some .mkv files via AMA, but it seems there is an AMA pluging needed:

'Unable to link to file or volume. You may need to download&install the AMA plug-in form the Avid AMA website'

I can't find a plugin for .mkv files in the AMA website or at least, I can't indentificate wich one of those plugins could be the right one.

Does anyone knows wich AMA plugin is needed to link a .mkv file?

    thanks!

Feature Request: Background rendering more than one job

    Hello Avid and friends,

I have got one request for mediacomposer:

For the background and forground render: A setting to start more than one job

I have a dual xeon with 40 cpu's and 80 threads and 10 gbit ethernet with raid and M.2 SSD, would be very nice to give them a hard time with background and forground rendering. We all know cpu power is in the number op cpu's these days.

I have set the background rendering to HIGH but that does do anythigng. I now use all sorts of other applications that do use multithreading.

    Thanks!

    Won't sync audio

Still earning this system, but haven't found an answer though this forum or Google yet.

I have two cameras w/ audio (Canon 5D), along w/ audio recorded on a Zoom (L/R & lav). I place all in a timeline to group, but our clap-slate is off by less than a frame and I can't nudge ANY of the four into sync. The waveforms should make this easy, but slipping them together is impossible. PluralEyes doesn't support Avid so felt it would be easy to eyeball on my own. What am I doing wrong?

I'm working with Avid MC 7.0.5.

Ghosting / frame blending issue on clips in Avid export

    $

hi there, hope someone can help me as I'm completely flummoxed.

I exported a film for a client and noticed a weird distorted ghosting look on some of the clips.

I didn't see it on my working timeline because I was working in 'draft quality' mode but when I change the mode to 'full quality' I can see the ghosting / trailing issue on some of the clips within the sequence.

Also there are green dots on some of the clips and I'm guessing that means there might an issue with a mixed frame rate on the timeline? Ugh! I have no clue on how to address this.

My project is 1080/25p. I shot the footage in progressive mode.

I didn't transcode anything. I imported all the clips as dnhd 36, edited the film, then batch imported the clips to a higher resolution of dnhd 185x. Most of the film looks beautiful and really high quality... but some of the clips look look terribly poor quality. So strange as I shot everything with the same camera and settings.

I did a video mixdown to the dnhd 185x resolution in a new sequence and exported 'same as source' but the issue remains.

    Could anyone please help?

    Thanks!!!
