relinking to files in MC 101 Lesson 12 - greyed out

I'm trying to make a video on MC 101 Lesson 12 Technical Fundamentals.  I right-click on a linked master clip, and in the drop-down "Re-link to Files" is greyed out.  This is true whether the media is offline or not.  Has anybody run into this?

Is there a way to grab all the master clips in a bin and make supclips out of them, without having to load each on into the source monitor?

is it "impossible" to consolidate too many xdcam50 long gop clips at the same time?

Hi, have a project where we hade to work lowres, and now when we try to relink, the computer crasches. Original media is xdcam50.

And even when I try to just consolidate the linked clips to a local drive, Avid crasches...

Avid compatibility with Catalina

Hi all....I hope all is well 😁 I have posted back in April about thinking to get the latest MacBook Pro 2019 16 inch but decided to wait as Avid was not compatible with Catalina, so I was wondering do we have updates on that?

I have saved up for the MacBook pro with the configurations that I need, I would like to have the option to have both software Premiere and Avid, my preference is avid for editing work, just depends on the job.

Thanks

Do NOT install Windows 10 Build 2004

Windows 10 build 2004 is causing a lot of issues for a lot of people, not just for MC users. At this point I would advise NOT installing build 2004. If you have already installed it, and have a restore point, downgrade using the restore point. If you've installed it within the  past 10 days, you can roll back the installation to the previous version. If it's been over 10 days, or you did a clean install of build 2004, then you're out of luck. The only option in this case is to do a clean install of Windows 10 build 1909 and then reinstall all of your applications.

If it's been less than 10 days, you can downgrade Windows 10 to a previous version. See the following Microsoft article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options

and choose Remove an installed Windows update.

Blu Ray DVD creation software

I am writing this post here because it is not about any Avid porduct. I am writing about other software that is capable of converting video files into playable DVDs and Blu Ray disks. There are quite a lot of options out there, but a common problem is that the media created often looks far too dark. If you have experience with shareware or reasonably priced software that does the job reliably, preferably on a PC, then I would appreciate your insights and your experience. Thanks.

Media Composer 2019 - the weak link in MediaCentral

$

In September 2019 I created 40 post-production suites powered by MC2019 and supported by MediaCentral Cloud Ux, Interplay Production, Phonetic Research, Remote Ingest, Avid Nexis Storage and plus from Media Composer Cloud; never as in this historical period all this has been key in getting on with the job.

In Italy, we are the largest post-production facility among private companies, excluding enterprises. We are a modern post-production company that fully responds to Avid Everywhere's request.

From day one it was immediately clear that the possibility of searching and sharing through Media Central Cloud Ux and Interplay were truly a step forward.

Media Central Cloud UX is a young project; it has some imperfections and still requires development but there is no doubt that your team is doing well and each new version has brought new benefits.

In this wonderful world, the only discordant note is Media Composer 2019.

I don't understand why in order to introduce a more modern UI, you had to undo all the previous developments that took years to implement!!!

Given that getting a feeling with a UI is a personal objective and that one can like or dislike it, I am asking if you have ever tried and tested MC2019 before distributing it? Have you tried MC2019 in the real world? Have you ever edited a video with MC2019?

Float Panels, Bin Container and Workspace are all great but they don't function properly and they destroy the work I do.

We edit complex videos, not news, not promos. Our timelines have 10 video levels, 30 audio levels, have a duration of 100 minutes and present about 13000 items.

Have you ever tried MC2019 with this type of content?

The new features of the UI you care so much about, has made Media Composer unable to work properly.

Do you know that MC2019 cannot export an AAF in any way if its contents are complex timelines?

Do you know that MC2019 is unable to consolidate a complex timeline?

Did you know that in 1996 it was possible to make complex consolidated timelines with Avid Film Composer 7.1 without any problems and that in 2020 the software is no longer able to do them?

And the list of things that don't work is so long that the forum doesn't have enough space.

Media Composer 2019 has made our job so complicated and we have managed to get by, only because we know our job well!!

I apologize for my outburst but I really care about you and I wouldn’t want you to make more mistakes, but MC2019 must be rewritten! As it is now it cannot work properly in the real world.

In the meantime, I am forced to use MC 2018.12.10 in all my suites. And that was by far your best project.

Does anybody have any tips for optimising settings on a 12 core Mac Pro with 48GB RAM and AMD 580X to work best with MC20.8?
Or MC site settings that work best with the Mac Pro?

mp4 out of sync

Just wondered if anyone has had an issue outputting an mp4 from an avid timeline and sync issues?

My timeline is 1080i and if i output mp4 directly from media composer its out of sync and more so by the end of say 10 mins.

If i output the timeline as avid DnXHD and convert to mp4 using third party software its in sync.

Its only a small amount but enough to notice.

Avid/Focusrite Scarlett interaction problems

Working from home, I have 2 complete avid systems, personal and work. I have a USB switch that allows me to flip my keyboard, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and printer between the two systems. THe USB switch is powered so it has plenty of juice to power everything. The Focusrite Scalrett 2i2 box powers my speakers and is the passthru for a mic for Zoom calls. This works great with everything except my work avid, which it worked with last week! Basically, I can’t get audio out from the avid to the speakers thru the box, but I checked and it works with the avid on my laptop. And i certainly didn’t change any settings, at least on purpose, certainly not in the avid. I checked both avids and they both seem to have exactly the same preferences and audio project settings. They’re both reading the hardware the same, recognizing the Scarlett box. The box works on Zoom on the work Avid and also on material from the desktop, so it’s not the computer. It’s something in the Avid/Scarlett connection, but it’s weird because the avid is reading the box. I dunno. Any ideas?

Ok, now I'm confused (about linking and which Plug-In to use)

$

I'm picking up a job that will be shot on Canon C300, AND using stuff from last year also shot on C300.

The Source Browser defaults to "MSP_MXF Plug-In," and FWIW, if I manually select the "Canon XF for Media Access" plug-in the Source Browser reports that the files cannot be linked. I chock that up to the fact that the files no longer have the original camera heirarchy... it's just a folder with a bunch of .MXF files.

When I brought them all in -- there's over 200+ -- and autosequenced them, everything drags and plays fine, but I do get some beachballs. So I started over and tried the Canon XF plugin and that's when I got the error. So I then manually switched the Plug-In to UME, and it all linked fine.

After I broke up the stringout of the 200+ clips into two 1-hour(ish) sequences, the beachballs were gone, but it left me wondering, which method should we be using?

Do we still need the Canon XF for media access plugin? Do we let the AVID auto-detect? Or do we force it to the correct plug-in once it's installed? What implications are there down-the-line?

Thanks,

J

OMG FINALLY we can export MP4 BUT....

$

It is SUCH a huge relief that we can now finally export MP4 out of AVID with 2020.09, BUT...

I notice we have no other audio compression options other than PCM (LE). For years I've had to use Adobe Media Encoder to make my approval MP4 files, and it packages the audio as AAC. So, okay, my files will be bigger, but I'm a little concerned this will create compatibility issues with file sharing. Doing a test on frame.io, there doesn't seem to be a problem, but...not sure about this.

Also, I've noticed that the H.264 pulldown has a few quality options... that is, H264, H264HQ, and H264HQ+.

The only one that doesn't massively lose picture quality seems to be the lowest one. Anyone know anything about that also?

TIA,

J

Multi-channel link preferences not sticking?

Wow, I'm full of posts today...

I noticed in the previous version, and now this one, multi-channel audio files seem to come in to the system interleaved (instead of LR mono like I've always had it do).

I must be missing some new setting here, but my "Link" audio settings are NOT set to interleave.

Anyone else?

TIA,

J

UME Linking to Videos with Apple Lossless?

$

Hi everyone...

Our government-provided computers were pushed to OS 10.15.6 and as a result, I've had to upgrade to MC 2020.9. I'm learning the ins and outs, but ran into a UME linking issue that I'm hoping someone might be able to confirm.

I have a whole series of video files that refuse to link via UME. The video files that do NOT link are all ProRes with Apple Lossless audio. Video files with ProRes and PCM audio DO link. A couple of ProRes files with IMA audio also do not link.

Can anyone else confirm this? Also, has anyone heard if future versions of MC will support IMA and Apple Lossless audio? Or are those formats relics of the QT 32-bit era?

Thanks in advance!

-Bill

Media Composer no longer offers ProRes export option

$

Hello,

I'm running Avid Media Composer 2018.12.8 on Mac OS X 10.14.6 on a late-2013 Mac Pro.

I've been running this configuration for a year and a half, intentionally not updating either Media Composer or the OS to ensure stablity.

Recently, however, Media Composer suddenly stopped offering any ProRes formats for export.  I can still export Same as Source (takes much longer!) or h.264 or various other compression schemes.

Media Creation settings still offer ProRes encoding.

I'm not sure what caused this, possibilty allowing FCP X and Compressor to update on the same machine.  How do I fix this issue?
