Best harddrive

I'm looking for internal harddrives for my HP Z4.

One just for general files and another two for media files.

Most people seem to recommend the WD Black drives, but I read many reports that say they are extremely loud.

Other drivers I've been looking at are the Seagate Barracuda Pro and the IronWolf Pro.

Any advice would be appreciated.

"Gathering AAF dependencies" hangs on, prevous advises doesn't help

Hi guys,

I did 3 45 minutes long TV show recently and I should turnover the AAF to sound department, and I've got this error.
The situation is the next: I've got 24 audio channels on my timeline, I want to export AAF for sound only, with the following settings:

The export starts fine, all media copied to the AAF folder, but the 'gathering AAF dependencies' never stops, the exported AAF stay 0kb. I did some research on the previous post, I did 'commit multicam edits', I did the link only option, I did remove match frame edits, I deleted MCState, no luck:(

The wierd thing that 6 months ago in the same show I did the same without any issue. The only thing what changed in the workflow is the Media Composer, now I have this version:

Version:2020.4.0.55005.0

Thank you if you could help me.

Constant crashing with very little obvious cause

MBP 2.5Ghz 16GBRAM, macOS 10.14.6, Media Compsoer 2019.12.2, All DNX36 media.

I am expereincing an unworkably large number of crashes - once or twice an hour if not more.   I am working on the simplest of assemblies - 2V, 4A, no titles or graphics or any media elements other than DNXHD36 media.  What causes the crash can be anything - hitting play, playing backwards, lifting a clip, jummping to In/Out point, even just switching back to the app using the Application Switcher has done it.  I have no unusual settings, the Attic is working as expected, the media, system drive and cache drives all have tons of room.   The project is not enormous - a simple feature doc.   What should I start doing do to try and reduce this crashing problem?

This problem is a long time with us. Still unsolved...

1080i50 project and UHD clips.

FrameFlex gives strange results that depend on the selected image interpolation mode.
ADVANCED gives a worse result than the STANDARD!

Avid please do something with it...

Longer project names

Hi!

I was wondering if there was any way to successfully create projects with longer than the 56 character limit?

The current naming structure we use is set pre us generating the project and we need to conform to that standard.

I know I can create a dummy project and then rename all the parts to the longer name, but then generating a bin is difficult since it could exceed 64 characters.

Is there anyway todo this in an Interplay environment or anyway to group multiple projects into one and view them all as one parent project?

Thanks!

Project Set Up and Transcoding for RED Helium 6K Res

Hi All,

I am trying to start up a project on Avid Media Composer. The project was shot on a RED and the files are massive 6K files. I know I'll have to transcode once i set up my project. But on the project set up, there is no 6K option. Only 2K, 4K, 8K and even 16K. There's also UHD. But no 6K.

Below are the project details:

- Resolution: 6K

- Format: Apple Prores 422

- FPS: 24

- Aspect Ratio: 1.85

I have Media Composer 2020.8.0. Does anybody know how I can set up my project based on my project information shared above?

Also, any tips on how to link and transcode these types of files would be so helpful. I've never edited files like this before, and i'm quite nervous to make any mistakes that could hinder me further down the line in the edit, once I have to relink to the raw files.

Appreciate your help!

Best,

workspace not showing in OS

Hello,

I can mount a workspace with the Nexis client: A_Nexis_Projects

But the workspace doesn't show in macOS Catalina. When I look at the Nexis client, there an extra number 1 behind the workspace.

For example: workspace is A_NEXIS_PROJECT but under the online column it's /Volumes/A_NEXIS_PROJECT1

No problem for Media Composer, it can see, read and write the workspace.

So not a big problem but I'm intrigued.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have a lot of stress to ask such a trivial question.
Why is the sound played from Source Monitor much louder than if I put the same clip on Timeline.
Sorry, but maybe someone will guide me in one sentence.

Hi I need to import or link rushes that I think is from a canon camera.  At the moment the only way I can do this is to selct the .MXF fro each folder.  Is there a way that avid will select allthe .mxf from the folders in one hit.  I looked on the canon site and it said no plugin needed.

Thank you

Looking for opinions on 2020 version MC...

Currently we're still on 2018.12.8 and it is working fine.  Over the past few years I've been following along with the various threads of complaints about the newer versions from UI niggles to what seems to be the biggest issue - the new title tool.

My overall impression has been a little bit negative to be honest.  Most of the point releases seem to be full of bug fixes and not much else and I've not really seen any glowing reviews.

We may be forced to move to the newer versions due to new Mac hardware being purchased, therefore restricting us to Catalina.

What are people's general opinions of the newer versions? Other than a different interface and title tool, does it mostly work the same as 2018? In other words, do people think there will be a big learning curve to get up to speed having come from 2018. I ask because the editors will be expected to just crack on and we don't really have time to get caught up with bug hunting and troubleshooting. Is the title tool a deal breaker for people or no more than a minor inconvenience? And what about quicktime and format support? Is that causing people issues? The show I work on uses a lot of GoPro, DSLR and minicam type footage so lots of MP4 etc. Will this be an issue?

What I don't want to happen is the production spends many thousands on new kit and then finds that the edit can't use Avid properly.

One final question, a lot of the post houses I know are also still running 2018; will there be issues providing them with bins and sequences from 2020 versions?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Andi

Editors Have Proof of Concept for Flexible Work Environments. Now What?

The media and entertainment industry has the green light to restart production—but while there are still health risks, many remote video editing workflows will stay in place. The question is for how long, and which aspects of these flexible work environments will go on to become the industry’s new normal after lockdown ends. Full Story here.

Unlocking Alpha Track

Greetings,

I need to apply a reverse/timewarp FX to a graphic with an alpha channel.  I can't apply to the clip on the timeline so when I step-into the clip, I can apply the FX to the video track 1, but I can't on Video track 2 because it's locked.  Of course, the FX looks goofy because the alpha channel/mask doesn't follow the action of the rest of the key.

Is it possible to unlock the alpha channel and apply an FX to it?

Thanks for considering!

Opinions on iMac 2020 vs iMac Pro for Media Composer?

$

Hi all,

I'm in the position of upgrading my current setup and I'm a Mac person. I've been looking at my options for newer technology and for the shows I work on, I've concluded that I don't yet need the horsepoower of a new Mac Pro. I'm not going to try running Media Composer through Rosetta on a new bleeding edge Apple Silicon device though. For the next year or two, a solid new Intel Mac will be just fine.

I'm not interested in a Macbook Pro (been there, doing that now) and I don't want to go the Hackintosh route... or invest in an older Mac Pro, tower or trashcan... which leaves me staring at the iMac 2020 or the iMac Pro.

Given how powerful the new iMac 2020 seems to be, really the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on it is my worry that even spec'ed out to the max - getting, say, the 10-core with 128B of RAM and the highest end graphics card - Media Composer is going to make it run hot doing a full 10-12 hour day's work, with the fans runninng more loudly than I'd llke. It makes the iMac Pro attractive, given that it's known to run cooler, but I know I'd be paying a premium for slightly older tech that the new iMac seems to best in many cases.

I know it's early in the iMac 2020's launch but I'd love to hear from anyone who may have one already and put it through its paces... or if anyone's been using the iMac Pro, is it still worthy of consideration, or has it had one too many tech issues to be worth the money?

Thanks!

Dan
