Caps Lock turns itself on automatically / audio scrubbing when not turned on

Using Media Composer 8.5.3 on a 2009 Mac Pro with El-Capitan. It seems to have a habit of scanning the timeline as if audio scrubbing is on (when it isn't) or turning on Caps Lock by itself.

Any ideas?
