AvidUnityISIS 'Delayed Write Failure' Errcode 0x3c

$

Hey everyone,

Came across this issue on a recent show. Basically the Assistant Editors are experiencing the 'Delayed Write Failed' error very randomly. They are working off ISIS client 4.5, and with MC 6.5.2.

Three things:

- Both assistants are working within the same project

- They first experience their Avid windows become jumbled,
- They then get the AvidUnityISIS error (see screen grab), and then Avid crashes.

I'm getting more information as I go, but has anyone seen this before and could shed some light on this in the meantime? I know a few years ago there was a post about this, but this is with a new version of Avid and the ISIS client is 4.5.

Thanks everyone!

Raid 10 Raid 50 something else? Whats the best way to back up your Raid

$

I am just going through my first ever raid failure and even though I did back up critical files I did have to get the Raid recovered to get back some older footage that I should have already puit to my LTO tapes.

So after this scenario and a truck load of expense I'm torn on how I want to set up my Raid. One thing I do know is that from now on I wll have my Main Raid, Back up Raid and a third backup off site. My question is what is teh best way to back up the raid.

My data recovery guy is suggesting Raid 6 ( I had 5) on my main raid which I completely understand but I want to keep as much speed as possible and after suffering the downtime recently I want to make sure I have a hot backup ready to go if my Raid were to fail.

My thought is to run my main Raid in Raid 0 as well as my Backup Raid and then Raid them together in Raid 1. Am I crazy to think this would work or is this a Raid 10?

My main concern is to have a duplicat of my main raid ready to go if it fails and if I'm going to have a duplicate ready to go I figure why not get the most speed I can out of the Raid. Maybe I just like living on the edge. Of course both Raids will be backed up regularily to my 3rd back up raid.

This leads me to my last question. Do you use any software to automatically back up your raid to another raid or drive? If I don't go Raid 1 I'd like a solution where a program is constantly backing up my Raid for me.

Any suggestions? I'm all ears.

Cheers,

John

Having trouble creating an .aaf file.

Under export method under export settings, I tried consolidate media and ended up with a small 5.3MB .aaf file.  I then tried copy all media and got an error message saying "cannot be exported using the specified "copy all media" to media drive setting."  How do I remedy this?

I should add that it appears consolidate media appears to be the right choice as it is copying and exporting 116 files and 64 clips, just that I can't explain why the .aaf file is only 5.3MB.

I'm suspecting it's not linking the clips.  In that case, how do I get them to link?

Nexis client, folders in workspaces occasionally locked on windows user level.

Dear Avid, Bob,

I see another case being opened for the latest project I'm doing but before doing so I wonder if you ever saw this before Bob?

About once a week a client of the Nexis storage, it can be a win10 editing client or win 2012r2 server like SGL all of a sudden produces a user rights access warning when you try to access a sub folder or parent folder while browsing either in an apllication or windows itself. Only resolution is to quit nexis client and start it again and that immediatly resolves it.

In the past 6 weeks I have become aware of it happening 4,5 times. So it's not a killer but still a bit worrying.

I've seen it happen with 7.3.2 client and 7.5. Weirdly never with 7.4. And because the 7.4 client accidentally did not include the fix  that could under circumstances cause the media indexer to BSOD, I wonder if that's related or just pure coincedence.

I already have a case open because 7.5 client causes BSOD's on 2 SGL Flashnet servers, probably because RSS is enabled on the 10G cards and wonder if I should open a case for this one folder user rights issue too.

How I Do It - Change exposure to individual title clip

Changing the exposure on an individual Title clip already in the Timeline.

Using “Step-in” and “Step-Out” to change exposure on an individual Title clip in the Timeline
At the very bottom of the Timeline, toward the left of the last row of icons, there is an icon with an arrow pointing down (Step-in) and to its right there is an arrow pointing up (Step-out.)
I have searched several textbooks (including the ones that prepare you to become an Avid certified instructor, and there is no explanation or use of these two icons.)

I was making a translation to English of a Spanish full length motion picture in which  I needed to have full screen titles to display the translations.

The actual title clips (created with Title Tool) where placed on V3.  V2 had what it would be the background to the titles, V1 had the motion picture itself.

After I complete the job, decided that all the translation titles were a bit too bright and clashed with the slightly dark style of the movie.

How it was fixed:

Put the Playback head over the clip -in this case, the title clip.

Select the specific video track where the clip is located, in my case V3.

Click the Step-in icon.
The Timeline display changed to a view of the Timeline with the clip by itself and for the length of the clip,  it displayed -in my case- only two video tracks.  One is the “matte” key and the other one is the clip with the title itself.
I clicked to activate and view on one of the video tracks the icon which allows me to view the specific track.
To make it easy for you, I learned that if you click on one of the two video tracks and the background of the displayed clip turns white, it is an indication that I have selected the wrong track.
Click to view the other track.  it displays the track with the original black background, I have selected the correct video track.
In all my cases, the first track was the wrong one, the second track was the correct to view and work on the actual clip itself.

Go then to Windows > Workspaces > Color Correction
Move the Gain slider to reduce the white of the title to the left and by looking at the center screen, will determine how much to move the slider to the right or the left.

Once I got it to the right brightness, go to Windows >Workspaces and click on the workspace you should had saved as indicated elsewhere on this manual.  In my case I click on Bert’s Workspace.

Click on the Step-out button.  This will bring you back to your original display of the project.

Closing a project and opening another

If you finished working on a project and want to open another existing project, locate the Project window, usually located at the top left corner of your monitor, the one that has “Bins, Volumes,  Settings, and the icon to open the list of effects.

Click on the X of that window.  The X will turn red when you place the mouse over it, it is  located at the upper most left corner of the Project window.
Once you click on the X, Avid will do a Save of that project.
Clicking on the X will close that specific project and bring you to the window where you can select a different project.

Highlight the different project and click on OK.

Creating a “FLASH” effect in Media Composer

From the Quick Transition, use a short  "Dip To Color,"  setting the color to "white."

STEP 1
In the Timeline, place the Playhead or  “camera” at the edit point where you want the flash to happen.
Hit the Quick Transition button.
From the drop-down Add Menu select: DIP to Color
Change the duration to a short one, or try the effect until you get it short enough.
Click the button: ADD

Placing the “click” sound effect of a still camera in an empty audio track and moving it left or right, to match the flash, will create the illusion of taking a flash picture.

But then you will need to create a frozen frame and perhaps turn it black and white.

Please see “How I Do It: Taking a Picture.”

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE FLASH:

STEP 2
-park the Playhead on the Quick Transition you just added
-hit the Effect Editor button
-Change the Background color, clicking the icon next to the color
-choose a color
-hit OK
-close the Effect editor

REPEAT previous steps to make changes, till you are satisfied with the effect.

Using this technique you could create the effect of taking a still picture.  Please see the posting entitled: “Taking a Still Picture.”

Freezing a Frame

Once the clip where you want to create the frozen frame is in the Timeline:

1-. Use the Patch Panel to select the video track where the clip is located.  All other tracks, should be off.

2-. Move the playback head to the specific frame you want to create the effect.

3-. Look for the Fast Menu (the hamburger), located just below and between the Source and Record monitors.  Click on it and hit Esc.  A little window name Tool Palette shows up.
(If you need to, you can actually grab and move this window to a convenient location on your monitor.)

4-. Click on the Match Frame icon (found in the second row, the fifth icon from the right.)

5-. The source monitor will change to the very same frame marked by the playback head in the Timeline.

6-.  Click on Clip at the top of the monitor

7-. Select the 20 seconds option in the window that opens up.

8-.  In the next window (Select Media Drive) select the drive where your project is.  It my already be selected. (In my case, I select the D:\ drive.)

9-. Click OK

10-. Avid displays a progress bar while it is creating the frozen frame.

11-. It will appear in your project’s window as an FF clip.

You might want to close the Tool Palette by clicking on its red X.

12-. You could edit the frozen frame clip by double clicking on its icon and sending it to the Source monitor, to make it shorter, or keep it the size as it was created.  In either case, press the Overwrite arrow (the red arrow below the Souce monitor,) to send the clip of the frozen frame to the Timeline, and it will land right where the Playback head was located to create the frozen frame, so the effect will be perfectly situated in the Timeline.

BUT: Watch out!  If you send the frozen pix clip to a video track only, using the Overwrite   arrow, it will write over material on the clip where the frozen frame came from, from where the Playback head was placed at the beginning of this procedure.  If you send it using the yellow arrow, it could throw your entire production out of synch.  Think before you do.  Check your Patch Panel.  If what you do is not good, you have CTRL + Z to go back one (or more) step.

13-. Use the Overwrite Trim tool to extend the frozen frame clip to cover the rest of the clip where it came from, or do any editing to complete the process.
Think before you do!  Check the Patch Panel to make sure the proper tracks (video and audio) are on or off to complete this step.

If you get a result you do not want, don’t forget  CNTRL+ Z to undo one step at a time.

And then.... SAVE your work.

HOw I Do It - Matching color scene to scene

Matching color from one scene to another

In the Color Correction tool, there is a feature that matches color between 2 different shots. On the CC (Color Correction) interface, you will see under the main interface there are 3 windows. The middle window is your current shot. The one on the left is the previous shot, the one on the right is your next shot.

Underneath those windows, to the right you will see a rectangular button that says "Match Color." Immediately above that, you will see another rectangular button "Midtones." Above that you will see a more square-like box with numbers in it. That box is the color selction box. It is broken up into 2 segments on the left or the right. The left is going to be the color you want replaced. The right is going to be the color that you are replacing it with.

The color replace works best on white colors. So when you move your mouse over the left box you will see your mouse icon turn into a color dropper/turkey baster. You click your mouse and hold it and move onto the whitest part of the "Current" shot in the middle. You will see the left box change into the color that you selected when you let go of the click on the mouse. You then need to click and hold on the right side of the box and find a white on the either the previous or next shot. You will then see that color on the right side of the box.

After that you just click the rectangular box underneath that says "Match Color" and that will automatically match the whites, thus correcting the balancing issue that you lens caused. Be sure in the "Current" shot box that you have the "dual split" selected so that you can see the before and after of the color correction that you are applying. Dual Split is immediately to the left of the rewind button under the Current shot.

Saving a color correction effect
Once you have spent a lot of time fixing the color on a clip, you might want to save the settings you created to re-use them on a different clip.

Click on the Effects Editor icon to open it.
Grab and drag the color correction icon at the top of that window.
Drop it on one of your bins in the project.
The color correction icon will appear in that bin with the date and time you created it.
You could change its name to something that will remind you where you can use it next, or where you just used it.

I suggest being organized and if you plan to need a lot of different color correction throughout a production, open a “new bin” in the project and label it “Color Correction.”  Every time you drop a new setting in this bin by following the steps indicated above, click on its name to rename as suggested above.

Still Picture

We need to create a frozen frame first.

A-.  Freezing a Frame

Once the clip where you want to “take the picture” is in the Timeline:

11-. The newly created clip with the frozen frame, will appear in your project’s window as an FF clip.

13-. If needed, use the Overwrite Trim tool to extend the frozen frame clip to cover the rest of the clip where it came from, or do any editing to complete the process.
Think before you do!  Check the Patch Panel to make sure the proper tracks (video and audio) are on or off to complete this step.

14-. There are many variations at this point.  You could make the image black and white.  You could resize the image and place it at an angle over a color background.  Your creativity is the limit.
Let’s make it easy.  We will make the picture black and white.

B-.  Making the image black and white.

1-.Park the playback head anywhere in the frozen frame clip.

2-. Go to  Windows > Workplaces > Color Correction

3-. On the upper left hand side of that window, click on Controls

4-. Grab the Saturation handle and move it to the left. The image becomes black and white.

5-. Go back to Windows > Workplaces > Source/Record Editing.  You are back at the usual display of Avid.

C-. Creating the FLASH

When you sent the frozen frame to the Timeline,  Avid created an edit point.
Place the Playback head right at that edit point.

STEP 1
Hit the Quick Transition button.
Make sure the correct video track is selected.
From the drop-down Add Menu select: DIP to Color
Change the duration to a short one, (I usually use 5 frames,) or try the effect until you get it to what you like.
Click the button: ADD

With the Playbackhead still over the effect, go to the Effects Editor and select White as the color.

D-. Making the camera Click.

Get the sound effect of a camera’s shutter doing the click sound.
Place it in the Your Project’s Name - Sound Effects directory.
Import it to your Sound Effects bin (or whatever bin you choose in your project.)

Double click on its icon to load it into the Source Monitor.

Do any editing you might need to do - if any-

Turn off all the tracks in the Patching Pannel and just turn one Audio track on, where you want the sound effects to go to.
Park the Playback head below the splice where you added the flash effect.

Click on the Overwrite -red arrow- to send the sound clip to the Timeline

Use the Segment Mode (Lift/Overwrite) -Red arrow on the Patch Panel- to move left or right the sound effect and force synchronize it to the flash.  You need to try and move several times until you get a perfect fit.

Creating a keyboard with foreign characters in Windows
Creating a Spanish keyboard

Often your titles (and subtitles,)  might required foreign characters, like accented vowels in Spanish, such as the letter é, or the letter ñ.

Please be advised that not all fonts have foreign characters. You might need to change a font in order to get the foreign character you need.

From your computer’s desktop click on Start.
Click on Control Panel
Click on Region and Language.
Click on the tab Keyboards and Languages.
Click on Change Keyboard.

Click on the Add button
Select Spanish (Mexico)

Once installed, you can select either language from the Task bar, at the left end of it, after the area where the time and date are show, after the speaker icon,e tc., you will find either EN (for English) - click once on it and you will find that you can select ES for Spanish.

Understand that this changes your entire keyboard to become a “typical” Spanish keyboard where items are usually NOT located at the same key.

For instances, if you have the ES (the Spanish) keyboard on, if you press  ;  you will get ñ.

In order to display the accented vowels you will hit the  [  key first. Nothing will happen but when you hit any key with a vowel, you get it with the accent, such as: ó

Once you finish working with the Spanish keyboard please click on ES and select the English keyboard, or you will go crazy when you start getting strange results as you type.

Problems with export. The option to “Keep as” effectively expands to full RGB

$

We have installed a new machine (changing from Mac to PC windows 7), and new avid version 8.6.5.

We have started a new project, a film feature shot in an Alexa Mini, in Arriraw. The DIT, which is an excellent professional, is going to transcode on set, and is giving us DNx36 mxfs.

The import process is ok. Well, we cannot import the mxf directly. We must link them and then consolidate. But the image is ok.

The problem start when we export, because even with the “Keep levels as” option ticked, the image gets expanded to full RGB. And that is a problem because the image is already a full RGB so it gets too expanded. We have solved the problem, applying a Source settings lut (full RGB to video levels) to compensate for the“compulsory export lut”.

Anyone has seen something similar? Are we doing something wrong?

We have done many tests and cannot find a clue. Besides, We have been plagued with inconsistent QuickTime behavior, which makes the same archive display differently in each machine (and I am not talking about the aspect of the image, but changes in the RGB values of the pixels).

Potential VFX Export Info?

I was wondering does anyone know if it is possible to have footage in your "project master" timeline with your projects correct timecode and etc, but then move some of that footage to a different sequence, but reference the "project master" timeline's timecode. That way when I send them a quicktime to reference it isn't say 30 sec of black and then picture and then 10 min of black (and etc). I trying to figure out how I would send info to a small vfx place, but minimize the amount of space for a quicktime they will be referencing that would match my timecode.

I'm quite sure what I've typed is incredibly long winded and probably won't get across exactly what I hope to do, but here is to hoping someone might have an idea.

Quick question about GPU usage...

I've read many posts on the board in ref to people constantly asking about graphics cards and etc to see if they work for Avid. They are usually told to look at the qualified gpu list in the config folder to find that information.

I know some people alter that file to do it, which isn't something I could do as I'm too paranoid, but when I went to see if I could find the list or etc that it worked with my MC just listed a text file called disqualified gpus.

Am I missing a text file or is it that "generally" most cards will work now, but are not qualified/tested by Avid?

Reason I ask is that my home rig's gpu seems to be acting up a bit (stock GT 120).

Most likely I'll just look for an ATI 5770 or etc that I know was qualified by Avid, but figured it coudn't hurt to check.

Difference between Avid and Resolve Transcodes of same Arri ProRes 4444 QTs

Hi, Guys.

I am supposed to transcode rushes in Ressolve, rather than Avid.  I am new to the workflow, but have followed many tutorials and read much advice.  However, when I compare the Ressolve transcodes to the Avid transcodes (made by AMA linking Arri ProRes 4444 files) the Resolve transcodes are lighter.  This is not good.  They should look exactly the same.

Someone suggested I could export the embedded LUT from the ProRes files with the Arri Color Tool and use it in Resolve, which I'm pretty sure I did correctly.  While it darkened the footage a bit more than Resolve's built-in rec 709 LUT, the transcodes are still lighter than Avid's.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the difference?  I have tried every permutation I can think of and am not really into all this color science stuff.
