I'm using MC 7.0, and pulled up a 10-year-old Standard-Def project that needed some updating (I think it was created with the ancestor of Media Composer, the Avid DV Express). I've been trying to apply a transition effect that I created in Avid FX, and it won't render to give me a seamless playback. When I hit the render button, it will go through the motions of rendering, the moving status bar and all that, but when it's done, the blue dot on the render icon remains, and when I play it back, the transition doesn't show. (It shows when I scrub through the timeline.) I have discovered that I CAN create a video mixdown, and that works, but that's a rather tedious workaround. I don't recall ever having this problem working on HD projects. I would think that working in SD would be much less of a burden on the processors than in HD, so it seems counter-intuitive that I'd have this problem. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance.
"Blue dot" effect won't render in old SD project

Exporting for DVD
Hello-
I am trying to export a multicam sequence for DVD.
The basics are these: A multicam edit in a 1080i/59.94 project. Obviously I need to get into SD for the DVD. But there are so many ways, and I've tried a lot of them. None have worked thus far.
I want to burn in Roxio Toast. I can get a file in there via a ProRes Mixdown onto a New Sequence, Export < To file < QT Same as Source. It looks okay except for the interlacing. It has the combed effect of a wrong setting somewhere along the line.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
AAF from Avid MC 8.5.3 to Protools 11.3.1 with motion adapters creates async segment contents
Dear community,
today I stumbled about something I just can call a bug.
The setup: Avid MC 8.5.3 on OSX 10.10.5 and ProTools 11.3.1 (the system base of that machine I don´t know as it is at a customer. I presume Windows 7)
We wanted to exchange a long sequenz 55min as AAF for voiceover recording and mixing in Protools.
AAF Export with following settings:
- aaf edit protocol checked
-include video unchecked
- include all audio tracks checked
-consolidate media and media in folder, not embedded in AAF
- handle lenth 500 frames
- convert audio sample rate to 48kHz checked
- convert audio bit depth to 24bit checked
- convert audio file format to MXF checked
- Include rendered audio effects and render all audio effects unchecked
Sequence settings are 1080p25 and most of the footage also is 1080p25, transcoded as DNxHD120. I exported a Quicktime.mov video in h.264 with stereo audio downmix as reference track and gave it also to the protools.
Everything looked fine at first glance, AAF export without errors, import in protools without errors.
But then we found out that on archive footage that was in 108050i and therefore got an motion adapter applied in avid, the audio became async in the protools timeline. The segment itself still was exactly at the right place and timecode like in the avid sequence, but the audio content inside the segment got shifted for a random amount, like 4 seconds, 2 seconds... without any logic! Really scary!
Importing the aaf back in the avid mc 8.5.3 and also in an older avid mc 7.0.4.3 didn´t show this issues, everything was perfectly in sync. It just happened inside the protools.
I did some research and found in threads on this forum and also in some avid KB article that there have been issues with AAF from sequences with mix and match, different framerates and motion adapters but there the problems only were of the following kind:
- media was offline (could be solved by "render audio and include audio" checked)
- segments lost their handle length ability
But no word about async issues the way we experienced them. And those posts mainly were from the year 2010 and it was told that with protools 9 many issues got solved. Bu we used protools 11.3.1!
I also tried exporting the aaf with include rendered audio effects and render all audio effects checked but this didn´t change anything, the problem was still there.
What solved the issue for me was, that I changed the field motion setting on all the archive elements from interlaced to progressive in the bins and then i did a "refresh motion adapters" execute for the sequence in avid mc. After that all the motion adapters in the sequence disappeared (i double checked in the sequence report file) and then the newly exported AAF (this time render audio effects and include was unchecked again) imported fine in protools and the async issues were gone.
So I think I´m safe to say that there is a bug in handing over AAF from Avid MC 8.5.3 to Protools 11.3.1 with motion adapter effects in the sequence. I could´t do a comparison with an aaf from an older Avid MC version and I also cannot check if this error still exists in newer Protools versions. But maybe others can try and tell here if they get similar results with this workflow.
The dangerous thing about this: The rest of the sequence isn´t affected. I had installed sync points before and after the sequence and everything was perfectly sync. Just the audio belonging to video files that got a motion adapter because of the 50i -> 25p conversion applied were affected, resulting in this strange shift of the contents of the segments.
Any ideas and experience is ggreatly appreciated. I will also send this bug report to avid support.
Thanks and best regards,
Felix
Nexis v6.1 and FCPX
Hi all,
We're using Nexis v6.1 with the current FCPX version and are experiencing lag/latency issues with operations in the timeline. Try to move a clip/s, trim a clip/s or other normal moment-to-moment editorial processes and the the latency is at least a one second delay before the response. Often we'll also get a SWOD for up to three seconds. We're using current MacPros with higher spec graphics cards and 32GB of RAM in each. We've checked the network comm speeds and they barely raise a sweat across our 1Gb network infrastructure, so something of a mystery at the moment. We've just upgraded the Nexis units to v6.1 and all machines are also running v6.1 of the Client Manager accordingly, so no miss matches there.
Interestingly, when we copy the same library, events and project across to a current Thunderbolt CalDigit RAID that we run in each room as well none of the issues happen - the responses are immediate and trouble-free.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this and found a fix? We'd be really interested to know.
Thanks and bye for now.
Updated to 8.6.1, need to uninstall old P2 AMA plugin
I just updated to 8.6.1 (Mac 10.10.3) and was warned I am using an outdated P2 AMA plugin. I downloaded the new plugin and installed. It specifically mentioned that old versions are not uninstalled but provided no instructions about how to accomplish this ...
When attempting to link to P2 footage MC crashes, which I'm hoping is just related to the plugin mismatch ... how do I unstall the old plugin? I found an old post on the forum directing to a folder in the OS X library that doesn't exist on my system.
Thanks
Josh
Trouble Removing Pulldown
I have a lot of media captured from digibeta to a 30i NTSC project years ago. They were captured as Avid 1:1 or 1:1x.
I was having a whole lot of difficultulty trying to convert the source clips from 30i to 24p, when I just noticed something unusual.
If I look at the "Video" Column, some of the clips are listed as "1:1 (NTSC) i" and others are just listed as "1:1 (NTSC)".
Guess which ones won't work...
What I don't understand is that a lot of this media was captured from the same tape at the same time, but for example I'll have two clips that came in with the "i" and one without.
What happened? I'm really confused about this whole thing.
Having problems importing AAF from Resolve and linking media
Hey guys, I haven't used AVID at all in about 8 years and I want to come back. Sick of Adobe!
That said, I have a project Im currently working on in Premiere. It's a long-term project, otherwise Id just finish it in Premiere. So I exported an XML to Resolve, and finally got that to work. All the media and red footage is online in Resolve. Then I exported an XML to Avid MC 8.6.1 I couldn't get it to import. It just asked if it was CMX or GVG and then either option proceeded to give me a bunch of errors. I tried importing an AAF from resolve via the using the Import AAF, XML EDL from the drop down menu and that didnt work either. It just said "no list to process." I happened to read somewhere that I could drag and drop the AAF into an open bin in MC and that actually worked. All the master clips are in the bin and I have my sequence on the timeline.. BUT, all the clips are offline.
I've tried relinking to the media drive, I've tried manually importing AMA linked master clips into an open bin and then relinking to clips in open bins, and that did not work. I've tried batch re-importing and nothing works.
I want to get the media online in MC ia AMA linking so I dont have to transcode all this media. After a couple hours of searching and trying things and checking the Avid reference manual on workflows I haven't found any instructions on how to do this, and nothing I've tried has worked. I've got 22 days left on my MC trial. I'd like to make the move, but if I cant get this to work then MC wont work for me right now. Any suggestions on how to AMA link to my offline media?
can i load monitor lut for tv in avid
i wonder if i can load a monitor lut for my tv like what i can do in davinci resolve to make the color consistent.
BMD progressive, how to interlace to 1080i50?
Hi there,
Apologies if this is a repost.
I am working in 1080i50 project for broadcast, multicam studio. Our new establishing shots were shot on the BMD cinecam in Ultra HD 25.
As the MBD camera's do not shoot interlaced (we found out too late) can somene please advise me the correct workflow for changing these into interlaced?
Also, does it make sense to transcode these linked files to dnx185x (which is what we work in and deliver in)
Many thanks for the advice.
Toni - struggling with formats ;)
Why does importing a quicktime cause a gamma shift, but transcoding does not?
Hi,
More silly Quicktime gamma shift nonense... I simply couldn't get a quicktime into Avid without it immediately shifting the gamma. So, after a ton of messing around, I discovered that I could AMA link and then transcode and the original gamma was preserved. However, if I simply dragged the quicktime into a bin, or did a file import, the gamma was shifted. Does anyone know why this is the case?
Record Monitor not updating while trimming in MC 8.5 or 8.5.1
I'm having problems with my record monitor not updating while trimming in jkl mode or frame by frame. This is happening with a (realtime) mask effect on the top layer for a 1:2.35 mask. MC 8.4 works fine...
Target masks isn't an option, because of my blackmagic output (only shows on Avid hardware).
Anyone experiencing the same?
Thanks,
Jasper
Where did duplicate sequence go?
Just updated to the latest Avid MC 8.6.2 and have noticed some menu cleanup, but I can't locate the duplicate sequence feature, and I used that a lot. If anyone knows that would be awesome.
Import Mxf from old project into media composer
hi,
My old computer crashed and Windows died, I had to install a new operating system and all reinstall all my programs.
I had running media composer 5, and its reinstalled fine. The problem I have is that I've 125gb of Mxf files to reimport into media composer and it isn't working.
I've checked my settings, tried AMA, tried a general import, tried the media tool device but it doesn't see any files, tried linking to the folders.
I'm at a loss, i don't know what to try. I am a bit rusty as I haven't done any editing for a while.
thanks for any advice

Bring back "Create bins based on subfolders" -- missing in 8.6
I can't find the option to "Create bins based on subfolders" in the new Source Browser or in Link settings in 8.6.1. (It was formerly in AMA or Link settings I believe.)
This feature is obviously a HUGE timesaver when linking to many cards of media that have already been organized at the Explorer level and when starting a new project. If it's gone it needs to come back!
I've just moved up from 7.x so I don't know if it is indeed gone, or for how many versions, or if it's just been relocated? I seem to remember seeing it in 8.4.x though.
(I originally posted in the Media Composer forum and it was suggested that I post here instead. I apologize for the cross post.)
Most Essential BCC Plugins?
Hi, guys.
What in your opinion are the most essential BCC plugins to know?
Workflow for importing media for documentary
I have a question about importing media for a feature length documentary. I am getting back into editing and have never dealt with such a large amount of media files. It was shot full HD 1920x1080 H.264 at 100mbps. AMA is not really an option because the clips are slow and stall. I have about 45 hours of footage to capture. What would be the best workflow for this? I have a 6TB drive and want to capture at a low resolution (DNxHD90) which comes in around 2TB of media, which is manageable. I am mostly concerned about the final online upres. In the past, I would capture from tape at 20:1, lets say 50 hours of B-roll which fit fine on a drive. The online was done by taking the media offline and batch capturing just the clips in the final sequence and it didn't take the clips in their entirety just what was needed in the final master sequence, then output to tape. I guess my questions are:
1. With 100mbps raw footage what res should I online with, when does quality not get better, should I still do a DNxHD 440x for final master or is a lower res fine to master in?
2. Should I find the maximum amount of resolution I can fit on my drive and capture all my 45 hours at that res so I will not do any onlining, it's ready for output?
3. Finally, with a file based 90 minute sequence, when I am probably pulling some footage from most of my clips and they are long interview clips, is there any way to batch recapture just the part of the clip used in the final master, or does it always re-capture the entire clip? It just seems that if I have to recapture everything again at a higher res (considering drive space), why not just do a higher res the first time?
Thanks for reading my way too long post

Clip Gain on source create splicing bug.
Every time I have an audio clip gain on a clip in my source monitor, if I try to splice it in my sequence, I get the following message:
Exception: FATAL_ERROR, msg:Assertion failed: IsSet (), file:/Snapshots/relengyosemite1_1469417176/coresw/ame/src/Consumers/EffectMan/APanVolEffectDefs.c, line:594
If I click the "debugger" buttons 3 times, it splices my clip but it's very very annoying. If "remove all audio clip gain on track in-out" from the Audio Mixer window, the bug is no longer. If i set back to "0" my audio channel manually, the bug is still there.
My clips are DNxHD 80, transcoded from Canon C300 MK1 MXF.
Anyone else having this issue?
TMAutoAPI Samples
Hi,
I don't succeed to execute any sample of the TMAutoAPI.
I tried something very simple, just to get the version of the client and the one of the server.
host = AvidTMA::Host::NewHost();
host->GetTMClientVersion(strVer);
host->GetTMServerVersion("My Workgroup", strVer, strRelease);
The functions return empty strVer.
In order to try it I execute the exe file directly from the Interplay Transfer server with a TMClient.ini file located just near the the exe file and containing:
[MyServer,MyWorkgroup]
MyServer=192.168.2.2,worspace
This IP address is the address of the server and worspace the name of a created worspace into interplay.
Is there something wrong ?
Maybe the TMClient.ini is not well filled ? To what correspond the MyWorkgroup ?
Then when trying to init the API with:
status = host->Initialize(&api);
It answers:
Error -191 (TMAAPI Error) Transfer library not loaded
Please, can someone help me;

AJA vs Blackmagic Hardware Avid Performance
Hi all,
We are currently running a number of suites on Avid 7 with Matrox Mini MX02s and are looking to upgrade our I/O hardware due to the Matrox boxes no longer being supported.
We are currently considering two options which are the AJA IO Express and the Blackmagic Studio 4K and were wondering if anyone has used hardware from both brands and could offer some insight into how they perform in Avid.
I know that in the early days of OpenIO we heard talk of Blackmagic cards not being able to match the performance of AJA hardware, does this still have some truth to it or have Blackmagic improved over the years? I see they now have a hand in the Avid Artist DX hardware platform so I imagine they may have ironed out some previous issues at least.
Any input appreciated!
