This week's Titler+ bugs

On 2020.12, I've seen the following bugs this week:

- A simple one.  Sometimes the Titler+ icon I have placed from Command Palette underneath my Record monitor says "Avid Titler+", sometimes it's T+.   Strange rather than a problem.

- Sections of my timeline from 2020.12 that were worked on by another editor in 2018.x and sent back to me have changed all Titler+ titles to Helvetica from Open Sans.   Both systems have the fonts installed, and the other editor is able to create titles using TItle Tool using the font.

- When these titles come back to me, and I go to reset them to my font, the text now lies halfway outside the bounding text box surrounding the text.   You can still edit it and select the text, even though it appears outside the box.

- The floating palette for Titler+ (not the FX panel - the panel for text creation etc) will not stick to anywhere I put it.  Each time it opens in a completely different place, and sometimes that place is entirely offscreen and thereofre invisible.   Closing and reopening the tool will see the palette appear somewhere else.

It's still a complete mess, though is now vaguely usable, so keep working on it please.

Single-Mark Editing not working when only setting an OUT point.

When I use Single-Mark Editing and only setting an IN point in the source monitor it works, but not when I set an OUT point.

What am I doing wrong? Because only setting an IN point works perfectly fine.

Feature request: Workflow - saving a Titler+ as matte key clip

One of the glaring issues with Titler+ is the inability to interact with the alpha channel for the sake of including the title in a layer stack. I'd like the ability to output the title applied to a clip to its own standalone animation + matte key effect (without the background footage). This would provide the following benefits:

1. Ability to apply corner pin / motion tracking via the Matte Key effect

2. Ability to incorporate the title into an effects stack or have it interact with effects such as BCC

3. Apply the title in multiple sequences and know that if it were replaced / regenerated that the title media could be relinked so that each clip instance would be synchronized (as opposed to copying the title+ effect which leaves multiple, unlinked instances)

This would be similar (but hopefully a one-button click) to the way Titler Pro 7 can be used to generate a title plus matte (if you've ever noticed the setting in TP7 to show alpha)...

Sequence report: how to NOT open Wordpad?

I'm generating many sequence reports.  With each one, Avid opens an annoying Wordpad window.

Can this somehow be disabled? I just want to save the file.

If it cannot be disabled, can it at least be changed to open with a real text editor like notepad++ or plain notepad?

If Avid insists that I MUST look at the file immediately after saving it, it should at least let me select a viewer where the content is readable. Wordpad just shows me a stupid printing layout page, with long lines wrapped, thus making it completely unreadable.

So is there a hidden option somewhere to disable that?

new apps in MC First

I just updated to MC First 2021.2 and downloaded and installed the latest version of New Blue Titler Pro 7 Express v7.3 but I don't see it anywhere in the Avid.  How do I access it?  Also in the New Blue FX App Manager it shows my current version of Prime as 5.0.1.  But in the Avid Link it shows New Blue Prime v1.0.0 and there is an install button next to it.  Just based on the version number this looks like I would be going backward if I installed it so why is there an install button available?  Thanks--

Sony Catalyst Prepare and MC 20.12 - AFF import no Relinking

Hi All, 

While working with Sony Catalyst Prepare I have exported "Storyboards" as AFFs which have been imported according to the Catalyst Prepare manual into MC 20.12. A populated timeline is automatically created with all audio tracks in the right places. The timeline shows red for unlinked media. No attempt to manually relink the media is possible.

Avid Support on this has been horrible, taking weeks to respond, then asking for multiple file uploads, only to conclude that "You should make a feature request". No analysis why the AFF is not working, why the relinking is not working, no indication of a work around, no indication of what the "feature request" should consist of. Simply abysmal support.

At any rate, has anyone else any experience with this workflow?

Media Composer Workstation Upgrade suggestions

Need some pro advice please. FINALLY at the point where it's time to upgrade from my current HPz440 (still a pretty darn good workstation). But I fear that most of it's components are going to become more obsolete as time progresses. 

Looking for feedback as to the best Windows based workstation to choose. I've got Avid's qualified PC list but I want actual editor opinions as to what they use, what works for you, etc.  Couple things:

NOT interested in going Mac. Nothing personal..I'm just an "old geezer" of an editor who prefers PC

AND..I'm not interested in building my own. I've had a couple specially built computers in the past and had issues each time

so I'm looking for the best pre-built workstation. As you can see from my specs..I'm way past due for an upgrade!

My current specs are listed below. I know I can trust this group of great editors and pros to guide me in the right direction. "Googling" it has done nothing.

Window arrangement in MC 2020.6

Hi everybody,
I'm working on MC for 20 years now but one thing I still don't get is where to determine the exact positioning the several windows. I like the 'floating bin'-option and working with tabs and I adjusted everything that it is convenient for my workflow. But it constantly happens that windows are not where they should be.

I know about saving workspaces, saving bin defaults and Timeline views but none of that really solves the problem.

I would be really glad if someone could enlighten me on this subject.

First 2020 - How Different is it really?

Hey all, 

Been working in AVID for work, but just little things here and there since I coordinate as opposed to edit or assistant edit. Wanted to learn it better (former Premiere person) and got MCFirst for learning purposes - given that context, here's my question;

How drastic (I thought it was just limited Bins, formats, etc) is the difference between Media Composer First vs (regular) Media Composer? OR am I just seeing big changes in the 2021 updates? 

I feel like there is a lot missing on/in the export window, finding AMA linking is harder (are they just calling it linking now? How come that doesn't take 50 steps like before?), switching the user profile, the soft menu options feel completely wiped out...Maybe its fine, and working on AVID version 8.18 etc at work has got me feeling like I'm looking at FCPX. I don't know. Anyone else experiencing? 

Is it 2021, is it First? Should I just upgrade to Media Composer? Thoughts?

MC 2021 720 59.94 Project Can't do 1280x720 at DNXHD100

In Media Composer 2021 I realized you can't import at DNX 100 (DNXHD TR) in a 1280x720 59.94 project, only if the project format is set to 960. 

But in all the 2019 AVID and I think also 2020 you could be in a 1280x720 59.94 project and import a file at DNXHD 100 (DNXHD TR).  

We really need this functionality since we work at 1280x720 but like having the lower data rate and standard AVID codec for it. We are coming from 2019 and so now we have to use DNXHD SQ no matter what in our 1280x720 59.94 to work at a AVID codec low data rate. It was perfect before. We can't custom set our project to 960 frame size cause we ship at 1280x720 so we don't want anything to get messed up in delivery.

ProRes Raw Issues

I'm confused, everytime I try and link my S1H ProRes Raw footage it looks overexposed and incorrect. I've tried using the available lut from manufacture to convert the ProRes Raw to Log but Avid does not display the correct exposure. My color settings are ycbr709. I've tried multiple source settings but nothing seems to work. 

Any help would be MUCH appreciated because I would like to start using ProRes Raw workflow.

Disappearing Locators MC 7 - MC 6 Compatibility Issue?

Hi all,

Long time reader first time writer here. Ugh, did I just write that?

I was working on a show on 6.0.4 software, and bringing home the projects and working on individual bins of dailies on my home system on 7.0.2.

Just this past Friday, I was working on my cut at work, on a Mac Pro system, with the dailies on Unity, connected through Fibre Manager, when my locators, or markers, as they're called now, began to disappear from my dailies clips.

When I would match back from my sequence, it would call up the correct dailies clip, but all of my markers were gone!

The markers had been placed there previously by an assistant on the original dailies clips. The show is shot in long continuous clips that emcompass several takes, so we rely on those markers--as well as Scripting--to track all the new takes and restarts.

I had worked on 3 previous episodes with this workflow with no problems--cutting some scenes at home, some at work, so it was a surprise.

Of course, my first suspicion was some kind of compatibility issue between 7.0.2 and 6.0.4.

I went home and checked and I did notice that the markers options in the Composer settings on 7.0.2 are more complicated - could this be causing this problem when i bring the bins back into 6.0.4?

We trashed user settings, created new bins, new projects, cut the sequence into a new sequence, trashed the MCState, zapped the PRAM, and even reinstalled the 6.0.4 software at work. And it still kept happening.

IAny thoughts? LMK, and thanks.

Oh and my home system is PC based Intel Quad Core i7 3.5 Ghz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA K2000 Video Card, local drives on Firewire.

Markers randomly decide to disappear

I can't seem to find anything related to this issue online so hopefully you can help.

 

I am currently working on a scripted series.  The director like to shoot 10-20 minute shots with many resets/retakes built within each shot.  So Our editor is working mainly through markers I am adding to each clip.  But every now and then all of my markers are gone.  To the point that I can make a mark close the bin the editor then opens the bin and the marker is gone.  If I reopen the bin on my side it will also be gone.

I can sometimes recover the marks through the unity attic, but only about 50% of the time.

Can anyone help me with this strange issue.  I doubt markers should be acting this way.

 

We are working with
-Facillis Terrablock (But we have had the same issue with a Unity
-Avid 7.0.2  (But we've had theissue with 6.5 & 5.5)

Clip Names Revert and Locators Disappear

I'm working offsite (so ignore my system specs below) on MC 5.5.3 running on OS X.6.8. Several clips that I have renamed and applied locators to keep reverting to their original file names and losing their locators. It's driving me nuts.

Here's what I know so far. The files that are reverting were shot on a Canon DSLR (not sure which one), they were then copied to my media drive and then imported (not AMA linked) at a low rez into the project. Many of these files seem to be maintaining the new names and locators. So far, I can see that files that have been cut into my sequence maintain the revised names and any added locators. Those I have not used yet keep renaming.

I haven't been able to spot yet exactly when the clips switch. I'll post more clues as I get them, but if anyone has any experience with this, please jump in.

Dongle Not Recognized in Big Sur

I've installed 202.12 in my iMac 2019 with Big Sur,

But the dongle can not be recognized at all, even I've installed the Sentinel Driver.

When I reboot after drive installation, no window pop up about extension blocked.

Quadro M4000 for MC 8.3 and Win10

Hi, my Quadro M4000 doesn't work with media composer 8.3. MC need the driver 340.84 but its not compatible with M4000?

How can I solve the problem? The driver 461.40 (production branch) is working but in MC the monitor is freezing....The driver 353.82 doesn't work with Win10...

21.2 Crash on launch

Hi guys

 

Moving from 2019 version to 21.2 today.   Installs and activates fine, but on launch when it gets to Reloading Plugin it bombs to Crash Message.  I remember reading about 2020 crashing and something about having to move the Audio Plugins folder to find the problem plugin.   Was that not fixed for this version?  What could be my problem?  I dont have Protools on this system, but I do have Premiere.  Would Premiere plugins be conflicting?

Bin View Bit Depth Question

There are so many options in Colunns view in the Bin View.

I was wondering if there is an option to show if a master clip is in 8bit or 10bit colour.

If yes, which column should I select to display for that?

Confused with Media Tool and Select Relatives

So what I'm trying to do is get rid of all the precomputes that are not being used by my latest sequence.

I followed the guidelines from this article from AVID: https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/en238681

So I have a bin with my final sequence plus all the previous sequence versions. Every next day I work on the project, I duplicate the sequence from last day and rename it with the new date. So I have in the bin a lot of sequences, each named by the date I have worked with them.

What I want to do is find the media relatives of only the final sequence so I can select them in the media tool, reverse the selection and delete the precomputes I don't need any more.

My issue is that when I click "Select Media Relatives" then all the sequences in that bin get selected too!

So I really have no idea if the Media Relatives that are selected in Media Tool are only the ones used from the final sequence or if the Media Tool has also selected Media Relatives from all the other sequences that are automatically selected in the bin when I hit "Select Media Relatives".

Can someone shine some light on this?
