Background Services Not Running MC 8.5 - Java/Security Problem?

After upgrading to MC 8.5, I'm noticing that background services are no longer functioning, though I'll admit that I have not used them in the last few weeks before the upgrade.

Steps taken so far:

  • Uninstalled & reinstalled MC 3 times (the final of which was a clean/manual uninstall)
  • Created a new user. The new user account runs background services fine.
  • Disabled all firewall & antivirus software on the system (Norton), including the OS firewall
  • Turned off wi-fi (though others mentioned they had issues with wired connections)
Here's what I get in the log when attempting to run a background render: Feb 9, 2016 11:47:05 AM(18)INFO: waiting for Host ready   com.avid.dmfengine.natives.AMAHostImpl:startHost Feb 9, 2016 11:47:10 AM(18)SEVERE: IOException encountered when creating socket to native code service, ex: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused   com.avid.dmfengine.natives.oop.SocketClient:initSocket Feb 9, 2016 11:47:10 AM(18)SEVERE: Error creating socket to native code service, unable to call native code!   com.avid.dmfengine.natives.oop.SocketClient:initSocket Feb 9, 2016 11:47:10 AM(18)INFO: result from EXTRACT_AAF_FROM_FILE is    com.avid.dmfengine.natives.AMAHostImpl:nativeOOPIsHostRunning Feb 9, 2016 11:47:10 AM(18)SEVERE: Exception deserializing xml: null   com.avid.dmfengine.natives.appdata.IsHostRunningResponse:JAXBDeserialize Migrating to new user account (Avid Tech Support recommendation) appears painfully possible, but if there's any way to keep that from happening I'd sure like to avoid it. Thoughts?
