Red primary shift and Full/Restricted range errors

Hi

I'm tryng to iron out problems in mastering from MC, working with a colourist using Resolve. After two batches of tests it appears that the DNxHD codec causes a very slight red primary shift, which could be significant for skin tones. We are also encountering anomalies with full/restricted range.

1. It's already known that DNxHD files display incorrectly in some versions of QT player, VLC etc. This appears to be a failure to correctly interpret the full/restricted range flag in the file.

2. AMA linking to DNxHD files they seem to always be interpreted as restricted range. Only by importing a file can I tell MC not to scale the range.

3. Whether AMA linking or importing a full range Prores test image, it displays as restricted range in the CC Y scope. Yet after exporting as PRoRes it registers as full range in Resolve and Premiere.

These results are forcing me to rethink our policy of mastering as DNxHD185x files. We are working with R3D and some ProRes Log C.

If we want to switch to ProRes mastering I believe we need to install an Apple professional product for the export codec to work.

MC seemed to be great tool for conforming and mastering since v7, but working with more professional workflows seems to be exposing inadequacies in dNxHD.

If anyone can shed any light on these issues I'd really appreciate it.
