Hi,
I finished an edit for the Make-a-Wish foundation over the summer. I just covered their Winter Gala and now need to clear the SSD of the old summer footage to edit the winter one. What I'd like to do is keep all my original linked files and delete all avid transcodes since they're much larger. This would leave me with a sequence full of offline clips that I would then batch capture from the linked files if I ever need to make changes to the edit.
Unfortunately when I tested this workflow I got an error. What I did was, I deleted one of the avid .new source files and then tried to batch import the offline master clip but got this error:
Exception: Cannot quick import a mixed resolution QuickTime movie.
I think I know what the problem is. My camera files were 4k from my GH4. But I finished the project in 1080p. So when I try to batch import my offline clips after deleting the transcoded source files, Avid is looking for 1080p source files instead of 4k. Even when I switch the project format back to UHD (4k) it's still throwing the same error. Here's my workflow:
I linked the 4k 24p files in a UHD project
Did a selects edit in a selects sequence
Switched the project to 1080 24p
Transcoded my selects sequence (so all my clips .new clips are now in 1080 24p)
Finished the edit in 1080 24p
That was back in August
So today I opened the project.
Selected one of the clips in my 1080 24p timeline
Clicked match source
Clicked Reveal in Bin
Clicked the Hamburger in the bin and selected "select sources"
(my media tool was already open and showing all projects on my SSD)
I then switched to my media tool and deleted the sources but kept the master file
Then I chose the master file in my footage bin (which was now offline) and right clicked batch import...
I pointed the 1080 24p master file to the original 4k 24p file and clicked import
and I got the error:
Exception: Cannot quick import a mixed resolution QuickTime movie.
So I tried to transcode the original 4k file to 1080 ProRes and batch import but got the same error
So I tried to switch the Avid project to UHD and batch import again and got the same error
So I tried to lay the original 4k linked file on a 1080 24p timeline, render it out in the exact same format as the .new file that's now offline (DNxHD 1080 24p 175 8bit) then batch import and link the offline clip to this version I just created but got the same error.
I'm out of ideas so I came here :)
I'm hoping the answer isn't that Avid can't batch import to a file after the resolution/format has been changed in Avid.
Cheers,
Jayson
