Tracking The AAF Metadata Avid Pipeline - is the metadata true or false?

Maybe this is helpful for using the Avid Relink Command and supporting assets that have embedded in the hour timecode field a value of 24 or greater. For those types of Master Clip Ingested Assets, in Avid Media Composer, relinking using start timecode selection does not work, using the same value in Auxiliary TC works.

Here is an example with DaVinci Resolve and the Avid Media Composer: The Metadata Timecode Value Carries Over

I have noticed that an AAF can be output from Avid Media Composer that can contain populated metadata that is different than what appears to the user as displayed as populated metadata in the bin column. One such event that I am getting technical calls on, is when in DaVinci Resolve there will be an edit index event asking for a master clip with an hour 24+ timecode. I tell people, look, in Resolve this clip in the Media Pool for conforming, edit the hour to match the event using Clip Attributes (Right-Click on the clip in the Media Pool and select Clip Attributes). When back in the Avid after the Resolve Render for relinking, for those master clips, in the Avid Bin viewed in Text Mode, duplicate the Start Timecode metadata by populating metadata into an available Auxiliary TC Column and then in the relink window select the Auxiliary TC value instead of the Start TC Value. In the Avid Bin, the Start TC metadata value rolls over after hour 23 to 00+ until it hits 23 again and then rolls over to 00+, depending on the actual hour timecode value, causing in the Avid Metadata Pipeline, for these types of master clips a relink to fail using the start timecode value in the Relink Window. Auxiliary TC value in the Metadata Pipeline is a true value and can be used with the Relink Window selection for a reconform, and then coloring and deliverables can be made.

If there was an asset that had embedded hour 77 timecode, upon ingest the Avid would roll over the hour timecode until it lands on a number 00 thru 23. If the Asset is consolidated/transcoded by Avid (rendered out by Resolve) etc, the value in the Start Timecode continues to carry forward sustained with the embedded timecode value.

  • To use the Relink Command for an embedded TC hour of 24-and-beyond Master Clip, the Start Timecode value is False.
  • If I duplicate the Start Timecode value Into the Auxiliary TC column, to use the Avid Relink Command, the Auxiliary Timecode value is True.

This is part of my study on Tracking The Metadata Pipeline of Avid Media Composer.

Here is some more test results with this Metadata Pipeline if one is curious about this stuff:
source a master clip and see if the AAF retains the populated metadata in the "Source File" Avid Bin Column even though the Bin does not display the metadata

Test steps:

Step 01) AMA link creating a master clip with populated Source File metadata.
Step 02) Give AMA clip a tape name, thus blanking Source File metadata in the Avid Bin
Step 03) Use the AMA sourced with a tape clip into a sequence
Step 04) In Avid export the sequence as an AAF
Step 05) Import the AAF into Resolve and choose in the AAF Import Window "Link to sourcel camera files" to use populated metadata in "Source File" column.

Test Results:
DaVinci Resolve pulled the correct file and then in the Edit Index the "Reel Name" was the "Tape Name" that I assigned in Avid.

lately, test results:
Media Composer Version 6.5.4 thru v8.5
DaVinci Resolve 12.3.1
Macintosh OS
