Best Mac hardware for a fast workflow on feature film

Hi all,

we're currently dealing with some Avid-problems on our iMac, such as:

- When jumping back and forth in the timeline, the progress ball appears very often and from time to time, Avid crashes without any reason.
- We had to translate a lot of (documentary) material using subcap effect. The playback of subtitled parts with more than one row stumbles terribly. That's why we have to render everything for a smooth playback. And of course, it's pretty annoying to always have to render.

I know, the subcap usually doesn't have to be rendered. That's why we wonder if that weakness and stumbling is because of our hardware, which may be too weak for all that?
This is what we're working with:

iMac (with 10.8.5)
3,4 Ghz Intel Core i7
16 GB RAM 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6970 M 2048 MB

We're editing on Avid 8.3.1, material is transcoded to DNxHD.
Would you recommend, to substitute or upgrade something here?

Thanks a lot in advance!
